We, the Moroccans, call the Argan oil as “liquid gold” or “green gold.” Argan oil is considered one of the rarest types of oils in the world because of the small spaces located where the argan trees from which the fruit is extracted, including forests in the Atlas mountains of the southwestern region of Morocco and exactly the cities of Marrakesh and Agadir. Arkan fruit tree and its precious oil are known for their, medical, nutritional and cosmetic properties many hundreds of years ago. Amazigh women used Argan oil in a variety of purposes, including cooking, cosmetics, soap making, treatment and as fuel for lamps. Argan oil has not had that widespread attention in the past, where it was considered as a simple rural product. But its popularity has increased after the big foreign companies discovered that it is a “miracle” when used in anti-aging lotions. It is also scrambled by food companies as a strong competitor for the white truffle oil. In an attempt to keep those precious trees, Ministry of Agriculture of Morocco formed an organisation four years ago to save argan trees forests to maintain their continuity. The National Agency aims for the development of oases zones and argan trees and establishing modern farms based on the latest irrigation methods and increasing the production of Argan oil. The demand for argan oil turned the surrounding areas of Agadir and Essaouira into a hive of worker cooperatives on a small-scale, dedicated to the squeeze of oil from the core of argan fruits. Amazigh women who didn’t use to work outside their homes Organized themselves into commercial cooperatives now, where they use their hands to break the shell of argan fruits, a technique which the used to use centuries ago. They break the shell using extremely hard stone called here as “TIMOUMA”. Women work hard for three days is in order to extract one liter of organic Argan oil. This activity represents a shift in the lives of Amazigh women who are selling now Argan oil through more than 180 cooperatives. Argan benefits didn’t only improve their financial situation, but extended to improve their social life; it has increased the chances of work, travel and become involved in shows within Morocco and abroad. World famous artist “Kim kardashian” said in one of her statements :
(Right, swear by the power of argan oil – and the production of it in Morocco is helping women earn a living in a remote desert where work is hard to find)
However, they still face challenges related to the marketing of their products of Argan oil. Modern methods of extracting oil directly from the newly collected fruits are available now. After that, the oil is automatically dealt with. These methods make oil extraction process faster and more efficient financally speaking. For centuries, the Berber women in South West Morocco inherit the secrets of Argan oil to maintain the freshness of the skin and fight aging and acne, and treat cancer and cardiovascular diseases, rheumatism, and prostate and pediatric dermatology. Some of Argan oil is used in the cosmetics industry. For instance, Idris Poti, Director General of “Cosmaline”, Laboratory said: (We brought both bio-technology to Morocco and high experience. We made our local products, products of international specifications as we packed them in a very luxurious way. This means that we’ve been able to compete with the finest brands in the world). The proceeds from the sale of Argan oil is between 25 and 45 percent of Moroccan families income in the valley south of Marrakesh and near the city of Agadir the location of argan Tree.
